Time:

10:00 – 10:40 am

Location:

Presenter:

Jeff Taekman, MD, Assistant Dean for Educational Technology Director, Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center

Session Information:

Since its creation, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, has grown exponentially. Duke is closely tied to the creation of the Society-recognized as one of only six founding sponsors. Unlike other simulation centers around the world, our group, the Human Simulation and Patient Safety Center (HSPSC), utilizes simulation both as a tool for learning and as a tool to improve healthcare quality and safety.

In this lecture, I will give a brief overview of our simulation activities in the HSPSC. I will primarily focus on our pioneering efforts using video games technology for interactive, interprofessional education and quality improvement.

Along the way, I will give a historical overview of games-based learning, focusing particularly upon ILE@D–Immersive Learning Environments at Duke-a common shared platform for games-based learning. I will conclude with an overview of the future promise of games-based learning–both in education and in research.
