Sakai Back-to-school FAQs

With the start of the Fall 2022 semester right around the corner, here are answers to frequently asked questions instructors and students have asked in the past.

Instructors

  1. How do I create a Sakai site for my course?
    • By default, instructors must create their own Sakai site(s) for their course(s) each semester. However, some departments have coordinators create sites for their instructors so we recommend logging into Sakai first to see if your department did so. If you do not see a site for your course, you can create one by following this guide.
  2. I would like to copy the contents from one of my past sites to a new course. How do I do that?
    • Instructors may only copy content from a past course if they are listed at the Instructor role in both the past course and the new, current course. To do so, see this guide.
    • Certain tools or data may have to be adjusted and updated after the import is completed. For example, assignment dates should be updated to reflect the new semesters dates. This can be done with the Assignment tool itself or in bulk via the Date Manager.
    • Note: If you are trying to import Quizzes, only draft versions of the quiz will be imported from the past site to the new site. As such, make sure the draft versions are not in the Trash tab in the past site before running the import process.
  3. My course is crosslisted across multiple subjects. How do I add all students from each of the separate subject rosters?
    • You can add additional rosters of students to a site by following this guide.
  4. How do I re-arrange the left side tool order in my Sakai site?
  5. How do I add a new tool to my Sakai site? For example, the quiz tool, Warpwire, etc.

Students

  1. I just registered for a course in DukeHub but can’t see it in Sakai. When will I be able to access the Sakai site?
    • First, not all instructors use Sakai for their courses. Confirm with your instructor that they will be using Sakai and that they have published the site for students to see. Second, new enrollment changes are added to Sakai a couple times a day. As such, you should be added to the Sakai site in 12-24 hours from the time you added the course in DukeHub.
  2. How do I re-arrange the sites in the favorites toolbar?
