Are you using Sakai in innovative ways to improve student learning? If so, you could receive an award! The Apereo Foundation, an open source software organization of which Duke is a member, invites submissions for the annual Apereo Teaching and Learning Awards (ATLAS). The international award recognizes innovation and excellence in the use of Apereo tools, such as Sakai, which enhance teaching, academic collaboration, student engagement and learning.
This year, the award applicant selection process opens on January 15, 2017 and closes on March 20, 2017. Winners will be announced in early April 2017 and recognized at the Open Apereo Conference on June 4-8, 2017, in Philadelphia, PA. In 2016, our own faculty member Associate Professor Jennie De Gagne won an award for using a new approach to teach an online course, featured at this CIT blog post. Here is what De Gagne said about the award:
As a winner of the honorable mention for the 2016 ATLAS Award, I was invited to speak about my entry at its annual conference. Participants were from all around the world with all kinds of incredibly diverse backgrounds, such as instructional designers, engineers, librarians, game developers, and educators. It was a great opportunity to meet and talk with so many professionals devoted to student learning and success through open-source technologies and methods. This network serves me as a meaningful resource for designing and delivering an active learning experience for students to connect theory and practice in nursing education.
