Saving Blackboard Tests, Quizzes, and Question Pools

How to retrieve Tests and Quizzes that did not import correctly from Blackboard

Tests and Quizzes were included in the migration of Blackboard course materials into Sakai course shells. While the majority of tests came over successfully, there are cases when the questions no longer have content in the imported sites. To check the tests and quizzes imported into a Sakai course shells, click Tests and Quizzes in the menu bar, and then select Edit for each of the working copies to review the content.

If an assessment failed to import successfully, it will need to be re-added manually from a zip file created in Blackboard.

  • Go first to the Blackboard course. Through the Control Panel, click on the Test Manager. Across from the assessment you need, click Export. This will create a zip file to save to your computer.
  • Within the Sakai site where you need the test, click Site Info in the menu bar and then Import from File. Click Browse to navigate to the zip file you downloaded from Blackboard and choose it. Click Import.
  • On the next screen, you will be prompted to choose what materials to copy into your site. The screen shot below illustrates the process. Click on Assessments on the left-hand side (1), move it into the right-hand side by using the arrow button (2). Then click Copy Materials (3).  The final screen asks you to click Finish to complete the process.
  • Return to the Test and Quizzes tool to review the newly imported test. You should find the test under Working Copies. Choose Edit from the drop-down menu to check for content.

How to import missing Question Pools from Blackboard into Sakai

The migration process also included question pools, but instructors have reported that some pools failed to import. To check your content, within the Test and Quizzes tool, click Question Pools at the top of the page. Click on the name of the pool to view the questions.

If a question pool failed to import successfully, it will need to be re-added manually from a zip file created in Blackboard.

  • Go first to the Blackboard course. Through the Control Panel, click on the Pool Manager. Across from the pool you need, click Export. This will create a zip file to save to your computer.
  • Within a Sakai course site, click Site Info in the menu bar and then Import from File.
  • Return to the Test and Quizzes tool to review the newly imported pool. Click on Question Pools at the top of the tool and click the name to view the questions. NOTE: Question Pools are attached to you instead of a particular course. You will be able to view them no matter what course site you are in.

Important: All questions will need to be reviewed in an imported test or pool before publishing them. Because the assessment tools in Sakai and Blackboard do not match exactly, you may find that certain types of questions need to be edited to work in Sakai. You will also need to alter the settings and due dates before publishing tests. More information about the Test and Quizzes tool.
