Using Wikis Well: Nicholas Tishuk’s "Wiki Love"

Wiki screenshotNicholas Tishuk gave a presentation called ‘Wiki Love: Collaborative Pedagogies for the Urban Classroom’ at a rare ISIS TechMonday (April 2nd).

Tishuk has been using Wikispaces to add an ongoing collaborative piece to the freshman and sophomore English classes he teaches in Brooklyn and Queens. What’s amazing is the students’ response and participation.

Here’s an example. Go to this link:

Here’s a page that appears to be an informative analysis of a work by the Beehive Collective.

This is the first post for this page, made by Nicholas himself (he’s teach11372). The rest of the content was generated independently by his students.

Here’s another good example of what they’ve done:

By using an open wiki structure, Nicholas achieves two things:

1- His students create, generate, and share not only the knowledge and comprehension, but they are also able to collaboratively generate a structure within their own community – outside the confines that Nicholas may have imposed on them in a basic CMS/LMS.

2- His students’ work is available publicly – which is part of the ‘payoff’ for their involvement. They are contributing and adding to a larger body of knowledge on the web – not just creating work for a solitary audience (the teacher and/or a small group of students).
