CIT’s Jump Start grants provide faculty with funding for exploring new technologies and discovering new teaching strategies. This year we funded the following projects:

Digital learning platform and gameplay: Assessment of integration of analog games and digital platforms in AMES 440S: Games and Culture

Shai Ginsburg and Leo Ching/Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

CIT and the Duke Digital Initiative (DDI) co-funded this two-part project, providing support for 1) developing of a serious game on conflict resolution incorporating cultural elements and 2) exploring how to effectively incorporate both analog and digital aspects into the game.

Support for Transgender Studies and Pedagogy

Ara Wilson/Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies

Wilson received funding to support several campus events with invited speakers focusing on teaching gender and sexuality studies in light of recent learning about transgender issues. In addition, the funding supports the production of one to three short videos about inclusive teaching, focusing on transgender inclusion in the classroom.

Promoting linguistic and cultural exchange

Lisa Merschel/Romance Studies

Merschel received a CIT Jump Start Grant for Spanish 203 (Spring 2017) to purchase 15 licenses for Boomalang, a program that allows Spanish language learners to videoconference with native speakers for improved conversational skills.

Refining student-based learning activities in Chem 302

This grant provides support to hire former students of Chem 302 Biophysical Chemistry to redesign classroom problems and homework exercises to be more accessible and student-friendly for the Spring 2018 course.
