Grants

CIT’s Jumpstart grants provide faculty with funding for exploring new technologies and discovering new teaching strategies. This year we funded the following projects:

Enrichment Suite for International Students in Sakai

Grant Recipient: Denise Comer

In response to this increasing (and very much welcome) diversification and globalization, the Denise Comer and the Thompson Writing Program (TWP) launched a new online resource (available on Sakai): theDukeWrites Enrichment Suite for International Students (ESIS).

Exploring Math Self-teaching Online Resources

Grant Recipient: Anita Layton

Grant supported Anita Layton and Assistant Professor of the Practice Emily Braley‘s efforts to curate a set of online resources for calculus to help students meet the Calculus learning objectives.

Genetics and Evolution Android App

Grant Recipient: Mohamed Noor

CIT and Online Duke provided funding to support a student programmer in producing an Android and PC-compatible version of the previously-created iOS “Genetics and Evolution” app, which supports the Duke and Coursera MOOC “Genetics and Evolution” courses. Versions of the app are available online, as is a quick video tutorial demonstrating the use of the app:

Languages in Durham

Grant Recipient: Joan Clifford

Languages in Durham is a community-based language initiative sponsored by Duke Service-Learning. Duke undergraduates research the history of the language community through interviews with local artists, clergy, business leaders, and community members in their native language. During the Summer and Fall semesters of 2014, eight courses contributed to the project. The results of their work are posted on the website in both the native language and English. The website is a public educational resource, hopefully to be used by Durham Public Schools, the Duke community, and Durham community members, among others. This initial phase of project (including filming and website development) was funded by the Center for Instructional Technology as a Jumpstart Grant. Read more about the project on our blog.

Theater Studies eBook/videos

Grant Recipient: Ellen Hemphill

Grant supported the creation of videos of theater techniques to be used with Duke courses, and also used as introductory explorations for creating an innovative e-book.
